By\u00a0Sputnik<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Addressing a recent detention of RIA Novosti Ukraine bureau chief Kirill Vyshinsky by the country\u2019s security services on \u201etreason\u201c charges, Andreas Maurer, representative of the German party Die Linke , told Sputnik that Vyshinsky\u2019s arrest indicates Kiev\u2019s political impotence.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n Kirill Vyshinsky, head of\u00a0RIA Novosti Ukraine news website, who on\u00a0Monday was detained in\u00a0the Ukrainian capital Kiev on\u00a0charges of \u201etreason\u201c, is accused of\u00a0supporting the self-proclaimed\u00a0Donetsk People\u2019s Republic<\/a>\u00a0and Luhansk People\u2019s Republic in\u00a0Ukraine\u2019s southeast.<\/span><\/p>\n Speaking to\u00a0Sputnik, Andreas Maurer, representative of\u00a0Germany\u2019s Left Party (Die Linke), described Vyshinsky\u2019s arrest as \u201ea gross violation of\u00a0all democratic norms.\u201c<\/span><\/p>\n Photo: Sputnik<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n READ MORE: Custody for\u00a0RIA Novosti’s Vyshinsky to\u00a0Be Determined on\u00a0Thursday\u00a0\u2014 Ukraine<\/strong><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n „Ukraine shows that it stands far aside from\u00a0all those democratic principles that are used in\u00a0Western countries. [\u2026]. It doesn\u2019t surprise me that this step was taken now when there is such a difficult and tense situation in\u00a0Kiev,“ Maurer said.<\/span><\/p>\n He pointed out\u00a0that during\u00a0a pre-election race, „Kiev is doing its best to\u00a0stifle the information flow.“<\/span><\/p>\n „So these actions can be seen as\u00a0an indicator of\u00a0Kiev’s [political] impotence. They try to\u00a0take control of\u00a0the situation by\u00a0notably intimidating other journalists in\u00a0the country,“ Maurer noted, also referencing Nazi Germany where he said journalists were arrested and then put behind\u00a0bars as\u00a0well.<\/span><\/p>\n READ MORE: Kiev Should Clarify Evidence Behind Accusations Against Vyshinsky \u2013 HRW<\/strong><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n He was echoed by\u00a0Frank Creyelman, honorary Belgian MP and former chairman to\u00a0the Committee on\u00a0Foreign Policy, European Affairs and International Cooperation, who branded Vyshinsky’s detention as „a move against\u00a0freedom of\u00a0speech“, which he said aims to\u00a0either sabotage the implementation of\u00a0the Minsk peace accords on\u00a0Ukraine or tarnish the upcoming\u00a02018 FIFA World Cup<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0Russia.<\/span><\/p>\n Ulrich Heyden, Russia-Ukraine correspondent for\u00a0German Media „Der Freitag“ and „Telepolis,“ for\u00a0his part, called Vyshinsky’s arrest a „symbolic action against\u00a0Russia.“<\/span><\/p>\n READ MORE: Journalists Worldwide Mark Solidarity With RIA Novosti Journo Detained in\u00a0Kiev<\/strong><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n „The accusation of\u00a0treason shows that the Ukrainian government wants to\u00a0make it more and more impossible for\u00a0Russian journalists to\u00a0work in\u00a0Ukraine,“ Heyden said.<\/span><\/p>\n He also suggested that the reason for\u00a0this „political pressure“ and „anti-Russian hysteria“ is the 2018 FIFA World Cup which opens in\u00a0Russia in\u00a0June and remains one of\u00a0Kiev’s main headaches.<\/span><\/p>\n On the other hand, Kiev is planning a massive attack against\u00a0Donetsk and Luhansk and they don’t need any Russian or foreign journalists covering the events, according to\u00a0Heyden.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/span><\/p>\n
